The idea behind ‘Ahmedabad, Parlons !’ germinated during a conversation about well, why weren’t we conversing more about our city? What does it mean to us? What challenges do we face as citizens? And more importantly, how do we collectively address some of these challenges? As we brainstormed, we came up with this idea of an informal coffee chat with a few of those in the city who could talk about this. The location of the talk series is the beautiful French Gallery in Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, and we are hoping to make this into a yearly dialogue.

Day 1 – What does the city mean to me?
We want to begin with what does the city mean to me. What do we think of Ahmedabad? It’s symbolism? It’s heritage? It’s people? How do we even define Ahmedabad? Is it a state of mind? Is it the people who live here who make it? We want to see it through the lens of the academic, the immigrant, and the local.
Day 2 – What makes a city run?
We then want to have a conversation on the governance challenges of the city as we grow rapidly but loose out on subtleties. We have three Starbucks, but not enough water bodies, we have the next biggest mall of India coming here but not enough space to house the poor. How do we handle these issues? How do we as citizens coexist with all that goes on around us?
Day 3 – Who builds a city?
Lastly, we want to work on understanding how is the city built? With construction work going on at every nook and corner in the city, who are these people who build our city and then disappear? Ahmedabad is the city of famous architects, but what about those who put the bricks and mortar to build the multistories and the bungalows? The invisible force that helps us keep a roof over our heads while living under the night sky?
