About the artist:

Dhiman Sengupta is a Senior Faculty member at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad where he heads the Animation Film Design department.

Dhiman loves drawing from life—his favourite subjects are people, animals, spaces, nature and architecture especially that which has historical relevance and stories embedded within. His sketchbook is his constant companion, pen and ink is his favourite medium to work in.

About the exhibition:

This is a debut exhibition of a selection of pen and ink sketches spanning almost five years (2013-2017) by Dhiman all sketched on the spot in the city of Ahmedabad.

In his own words:

”Ruins, shadows, movement and spaces excite me. History and diversity, details chiseled in stone or wood hundreds of years ago, people at work or rest, the interplay of light and shadow—these are the things I look out for when trying to choose a subject to draw. The city of Ahmedabad has all of this and more in plenty.

I draw in ink and quite fast, so all I can capture are impressions in greater or lesser detail. The ink marks are final, sometimes I like adding halftone textures to my drawings digitally, perhaps to simulate the newspaper cartoons and illustrations that caught my attention as a child.”
