Cotton, Brick and Sugar
Where does your cotton Tshirt really come from? What about the sugar you put in your tea or coffee? And the bricks that build our multicrore homes? Who are the people behind these? Do we know them?

We will take you to South Gujarat where tribals from three districts of Gujarat and Maharashtra spend months living in dire conditions to cut down the sugar cane crop so you and I can enjoy our capuccinnos and sugary goods.

From here we will go to Banaskantha and Kutch, where cotton workers, mainly children pluck the cotton for three months on site and then migrant workers risk their lives in ginning industries. Gujarat is the leading cotton producer in the world, but the story is darker than that.

What about bricks? Well all around the outskirts of Ahmedabad city, which is boasting of growing FSIs and fancier apartments, workers live under plastic sheets to make bricks, entire families are bonded labour to pay off debts taken from brick contractors.

The talk will feature grassroots leaders and workers from each of the sector who will tell their story along with a short temporary museum of their tools as exhibits. As a conscientious consumer and citizen, these are stories that must be told and heard.
